Whether or not you buy local and organic when possible to change our food culture in America or simply because you love the taste, it doesn’t really matter but to support the local farmers that produce this food there is no better and rewarding way than to sign up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).
Now it’s easier than ever for Nokomis folks to support and benefit from local & organically grown fruits & vegetables because Oxendale’s Market has signed up to be a pick up site for an excellent CSA – Featherstone Farm.
My wife and I with another couple have signed up each season with Featherstone for the last 3 years and it has been great to pick up all those fruits and veggies and start pulling out recipes to use them all up.
In the past we drove to other drop sites to pick up our “box” like Seward Co-Op and Birchwood Cafe, and don’t get me wrong, we love both and go often but every once and awhile when in a pinch for time, it would have been nice to be able to pick up 3 blocks away or even better just walk down.
You may wonder why a grocery store would allow for a drop site but it is because of the Oxendale’s commitment to local and organic in their store but in making connections with these same local farmers. I know there will be other benefits for them too because we often finished our shopping at Seward Co-Op or picked up something at Birchwood Cafe when we stopped in each week for our box of goodies!
